The Jane McCrea Chapter, NSDAR, was organized January 27, 1899, in Glens Falls, New York.

The chapter is named for Jane McCrea, sweetheart of an officer in British Brigadier General John Burgoyne's army. In July of 1777 Jane was invited to Burgoyne’s camp by her fiancé David Jones. Jane and her friend Sara McNeil were being escorted to meet the Army when something went wrong. Sara arrived but Jane did not. Legend says Huron-Wyandot warriors quarreled over a reward and Jane was murdered. Another version states she was killed by friendly fire as Americans pursued the group. Her death at 17 led to an increase in enlistment of locals to the revolution. In October of 1777 General Burgoyne was defeated at Saratoga. Some say it was because of Jane McCrea.

The painting at left, "Capture of Jane McCrea" was painted by Frederick Coffay Yohn circa 1920. It depicts of the conjectured capture of Jane McCrea by Native Americans associated with the British forces in July 1777. The painting is in the collection of The Chapman Museum and is used by permission.

The chapter meets September through June on the third Tuesday of the month.
